When Franz came to know that it was going to be his teacher's last lesson, he was shocked and dumbstruck. He knew very well that he did not know anything about his language. He was regretting for not paying proper attention to his study. He understood why so many villagers had come there. They were sitting in his class to thank him for his faithful service of 40 years.

The teacher asked him about the rules of participles but he could not tell. The teacher did not rebuke him. He blamed everybody. He blamed the people for putting off the things till the next day. He blamed the parents for sending their children to work for money in place of study. He blamed himself also for allowing children to go for holiday whenever they wanted.

According to him, it was a matter of embarrassment for French people that they did not know their own language. He said that language is the key to prison. As long as one holds his language, he has a key to prison. He took his classes. He was looking very confident. Franz also thought that he understood everything.

At the end of the class he wanted to say many things but his throat was choked because of emotions. He concluded the class by saying 'Vive La France' that means victory to France.

#28 Class 12 The Last Lesson (Flamingo class XII) Part--1-- 07/04/2020

Hello Dear Students,
At this time of unprecedented crisis, I request all of you to stay home to stay safe. Put your questions in the comment box.

Introduction-- The last lesson is the first chapter of your book Flamingo. It becomes very ironical in the sense that it is the first lesson of your book yet it is named or titled as the last lesson. This lesson is composed by Alphonse Daudet. He was born in 1840 and died in 1897. He was a French novelist and short story writer. The background of this story is the war between France and Prussia. This was won by Prussia. France was defeated  and they had to surrender their land and entire resources. French districts of Alsace and Lorraine had been captured. Daudet is narrating all those things in this lesson.

You may not have the books with you presently. You can download the PDF copy of the chapter here.

The main characters of this lesson are  Franz  and  M. Hamel.

Franz is a student while M.Hamel is the name of the teacher.

The summary of the first three pages----

Please read the text also.

1. At the beginning of the story it is told to us that Franz did not want to go to school on account of two reasons--- the first reason was that weather outside was very brilliant. The birds were chirruping  at the edge of the votes and he wanted to see the prussian soldiers who were drilling. The second reason was that his  teacher was going to ask him the rules of particles but the real situation was that he did not know even a single word about the participles.

2.  But he had power to control his fear so he started for school when he reached the school he found that before the bulletin board (Notice board)  so many people were standing there. He had a doubt in his mind because all the bad news had come from that bulletin board only. He wanted to see the bulletin board but he had no time that's why he went to the class of M. Hamel.

 3. As soon as he entered into the class he found that classroom was unusually silent on that day. Previously it was very noisy and he used the noisy atmosphere of the class to enter into the classroom without being seen by the teacher  but on that day it was very silent. As soon as he  entered into the class everybody saw him including his teacher and all the students. He was embarrassed but the teacher did not say anything to him. He did not scold him for coming late and he allowed him into the class.

4. After entering into the class he found that all the students of the class were fully focused towards their study. His teacher was wearing a special green coat with filled shirt and little black Silk cap which he generally used to wear only on inspection and prize days. He was very surprised to see some of the villages also sitting at the back benches of the class. Suddenly M hamel announced that it was going to be his last lesson of French. He informed all that an order had come from Berlin to teach only German in the schools of France. These words were like thunderclap to him. He was completely shocked. He was not expecting that. He was in a regretful mood for not learning his language.

Important Questions from the first three pages

Q.2 What was the importance of the bulletin board?
Q.3 How did Franz use the commotion of the school to enter into the class room?

# 27 Paraphrasing of the poem--- The Voice of the Rain

The poem is composed by Walt Whitman. The poem starts in a conversation mode. The conversation is between the poet and the rain. The poet asks the rain who it was. The poet says it is very strange that the rain answered his question. It is very strange but he will translate the answer of the rain. The rain says it is the poem of the earth. It rises from the land and the sea at the untouchable height. There in the sky it takes different shapes of the clouds yet essentially it is the vapour only. It comes down to clean the drought, atom particles and dust layers of the sky. According to the rain, all seeds in the earth will be seeds only if it does not fall. Continuously it falls on the earth and meets it's own origin. Therefore the poem indicates towards the rain cycle. The poet keeps the last two lines in the bracket to grab the attention of the readers and to convey the message that a good work returns back to it's doer with love. As the rain after falling on the earth returns back to its origin, in the same way a good work returns back to its doer.

#26 Paraphrasing of the poem-- The Laburnum Top

The Laburnum Top

The top of the Laburnum is silent. In fact, it is very silent. It is the time of the afternoon, Yellow sunlight of the September is spreading everywhere. A few yellow leaves have started to become yellow and they are ready to fall. All the poisonous seeds of the tree have already fallen.
This silence of the tree is maintained only till the time the goldfinch arrives there. She is abrupt, sleek and alert before entering into her nest. As soon as she enters into the nest a machine of the birds' voices like chittering, trilling and tremor of wings. The whole tree starts to tremble and thrill. This nest is the engine of her family. She is stocking it with the fuel of grains. After that she again reaches to the branch end. The tree is yellow, the bird is yellow so it is difficult to trace the bird. This identity mask is opened only by the black bars on the forehead of the bird. Giving very strange, delicate whistling, chirruping and whispering sound the bird flies towards the sky. The laburnum tree returns to emptiness and silence.
